PlayStation Plus games dominate the Top 10

Monthly PlayStation Plus games are normally a big hit, but December’s triple title Mortal Shell, LEGO DC Super-Villians, and Godfall: Challenger Edition made a truly explosive appearance. Here is the top 40 from the PlayStation Gameplay Chart for the week ending December 12, 2021.

Let’s move beyond Boring Central Station’s normal population – Fortnite, Call of Duty, GTA V, and FIFA 22 – to get into the top ten. The three monthly PlayStation Plus games for December are in the top ten: Mortal Shell (10), LEGO DC Super-Villians (7) and Godfall: Challenger Edition (6). The triple combo of PS4 and PS5 games has been mired in discussions about upgrades and counterfeit versions this month, with Godfall: Challenger Edition catching much of the criticism for stalling half the game. However, This seems to have had little impact as gamers helped Godfall give Grand Theft Auto a run for its money, which is all the more impressive considering that GTA V is a PS4 game and Godfall is PS5 only. The fun little LEGO DC Super-Villians gem can also be blown away by its performance, slipping right behind the old title while laughing maniacally. Rocket League and Apex Legends have split the difference between the Plus game pair and the upcoming entry, Mortal Shell. The SoulsBorne title just makes it into the top ten, but make no mistake, it’s impressive for a niche genre title, even though it’s “free”.

We have to pay a second attention to Battlefield 2042 here for slipping from 6th to 12th. Rumors are that player count is slipping below even the much-maligned Battlefield V, but it’s still higher than our charts. That being said, last week’s drop is huge, and we don’t think it’s going to improve for a long time yet. This teenage region of venues seems to belong to those live service games that just slowed down with the launch of PS Plus games, with five and three seater slips evident in most cases. A big winner, however, is in the mix. Marvel’s Spider-Man moved up five spots to 21st, which is a clear sign that this is the must-see PlayStation title of the year despite releasing Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart at a very poor 79th place.

Grand Theft Auto III – Definitive Edition climbed to an impressive 30th position after entering the PlayStation Now service. This suggests that among our followed users, PlayStation Now actually has a bit of influence at the lower end of the gaming table. The most catastrophic result this week is probably Marvel’s Avengers in 32nd, which drops 12 spots. The Crystal Dynamics game just can’t hold players back, even with a huge update and the introduction of Spider-Man as a playable character. The update has only been out for a few days! Our man in the field, publisher Luke, tells you more about the game in his latest inventory.
